What is RPA?
Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is a technology that helps you design, build, train, operate and manage software bots that automate repetitive and predictable human tasks executed using a software, e.g. read a PDF invoice, enter the invoice into an Excel sheet, punch an order into a legacy system, copy-paste information from an ERP system into a customer order system because they are not integrated, etc. RPA helps you deploy a digital workforce that executes volumes of repetitive tasks without any human intervention. This army of software bots once trained, will execute such tasks flawlessly, giving you complete control and visibility into their execution. The bots are humble (and smart) enough to hand-over tasks to humans in exceptional scenarios when they do not know how to execute.
Digital Workforce for mundane tasks | Human Workforce for value added tasks
Enter an office of any corporation of your choice and you will see dozens to hundreds of qualified and educated individuals performing mundane and repetitive tasks on their computers. Examples include copy-pasting information from a document to another, re-entering data into multiple systems or simply maintaining records in an Excel sheet. How about making these individuals focus on tasks that really add more value to the organization?
Tasks executed by humans are also prone to errors. Mundane tasks tend to bring boredom and reduce employee motivation.
How about making these individuals focus on tasks that really add more value to the organization?
An organization needs RPA to replace their skilled and qualified human workforce with a digital workforce so that they can be deployed to perform more value-added work which a bot cannot perform - e.g. Product Design, Strategy, Customer Engagement or handling exceptional scenarios that a bot cannot. By handing over mundane tasks to a bot, companies can make their human workforce more motivated and focused on value-add work.
RPA and BPM
Synergies for Process Excellence
Both RPA and BPM aim to improve efficiency of a business process through automation, accuracy, visibility and scale. The ways and means with which these two distinct technologies achieve process transformation are different. While BPM focuses on automating end-to-end business process bringing multiple people and systems together in a unified process layer, RPA focuses on automating individual mundane tasks via trained software bots. The two technologies complement each other significantly and offer synergies to deliver immense combined value to customers.
Here are a few examples of how RPA and BPM complement each other:
- An Order Entry Process automated on BPM has a task of entering data into two different systems manually - automated by RPA
- An invoice received as a PDF is read manually and entered into a system - automated by RPA triggering an invoice process in BPM
- RPA robot encounters exception that it cannot handle - triggers human intervention via BPM
- Business rules in a BPM process decide if an activity needs human intervention or can it be handed over to an RPA bot?
Princeton Blue has strong experience and skillset in both - BPM and RPA. We have built strong capabilities to offer RPA Consulting Services to our clients. If you already own a BPM platform, we will help you take advantage of the synergies between the two with our decade of BPM experience.

RPA in Action
Automated Invoice Processing
Princeton Blue's Automated Invoice Processing solution leverages the power of Robotic Automation and BPM to achieve end-to-end automation of invoice processing. Built using Pega Robotic Automation, the solution aims to transform invoice processing by automating manual activities with RPA and leverage BPM for workflow automation and approvals. The solution offers to build quick integrations with back-end systems using RPA and business rules and approvals in BPM to achieve seamless process execution with superior efficiency and visibility.
BPM and RPA enabled Pharmaceutical Solutions
The next generation of process automation solutions for our pharmaceutical clients will leverage BPM and RPA to deliver even more complete end-to-end automation than previously achieved with BPM alone. The first set of these solutions will likely include Clinical Study Management and Pharmacovigilance and Label Management. Both these solutions help reduce the R&D timeline while easing the regulatory burden during the drug development lifecycle. Watch this space as we unfold the synergies of BPM and RPA for our pharmaceutical clients.
Princeton Blue is ahead of the curve in this emerging automation technology and its wide array of benefits. Our qualified consultants are already up to speed on the latest RPA software training and insights. Let us help you with your digital transformation journey.
